Nanoplasmonics: from enhanced Raman spectroscopy and chemical reaction to optical tweezer of molecules

Abstract
Plasmonics is a scientific branch of nanophotonics, studying the localization, propagation and guidance of surface plasmons in nanostructures to manipulate light in subwavelength dimensions. It can realize a series of unique optical properties and thus further sensing and manipulating single molecules. I’ll start from historical reminiscence on the discovery of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) effect, as the first branch of plasmonics, in the mid-1970 and discuss some inspiration from this pioneering work. Then my talk summarizes the recent progresses. 1) shell-isolated nanoparticle-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SHINERS) as a new generation of SERS with ultra-high sensitivity for pushing the limit to single-molecule sensitivity, sub-nanometer spatial resolution and versatility of application. 2) plasmon-mediated chemical reaction (PMCR) based surface plasmons acting as mediators to redistribute and convert the photon energy in time, space and energy scales, thus drive chemical reactions, which has unique characteristics distinct from existing photo- and thermal-reaction systems. 3) a strategy of single molecule plasmonic optical trapping/tweezer (SMPOT) to directly trap, investigate and release single molecules in solution by using an adjustable plasmonic optical nanogap.
等离激元光子学(Plasmonics)是纳米光子学的一个科学分支,通过研究等离激元在纳米结构中的局域化和传播而实现在亚波长尺度上操纵光,由此实现一系列独特的光学特性,进而检测和操纵分子。我将首先回顾二十世纪七十年代中期表面增强拉曼散射(SERS)效应的发现(也是等离激元光子学的首个兴起的分支)发展的艰难历程,探讨开拓新方向的一些启示。然后简要介绍三个相关方向的最新进展:1)壳层隔绝纳米粒子增强拉曼光谱(SHINERS)作为具有超高灵敏度的新一代 SERS技术,在单分子灵敏度、亚纳米空间分辨率和电催化和电池等方面的应用;2)等离激元介导化学反应(PMCR)可在时间、空间和能量尺度上重新分配和转换光子能量,从而驱动现有光化学和热化学体系难以发生的化学反应;3)等离激元光捕获/光镊(SMPOT)策略可通过纳米间隙的调制实现在溶液中直接捕获、研究和释放单个分子。
Biography
Zhong-Qun Tian, Professor of Chemistry at Xiamen Univ., China. He obtained his BSc at Xiamen Univ. in 1982 and his PhD under the supervision of M. Fleischmann (FRS) on electrochemical SERS at the Univ. of Southampton in 1987. Then he returned to Xiamen Univ. and was promoted to full professor in 1992. His main research interests include SERS, spectroelectrochemistry, plasmonics, nanochemistry. He was elected as Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (MCAS) and RSC Fellow in 2005, Fellow of International Society of Electrochemistry (ISE) in 2010 and Fellow of the World Academy of Sciences (FTWAS) in 2014. He received several awards from ISE, USA, UK, France, Japan and China. He currently is the Director of Fujian Science & Technology Innovation Laboratory for Energy Materials, the Immediate-Past President of ISE, member of editorial advisory board for over ten international journals including Matter, JACS, Chem, Chem. Sci. and National Science Rev., and an associate editor for Science in China-Chemistry and Chem. Soc. Rev.
田中群,厦门大学教授。1982年在厦门大学获得学士学位。1983-87年在英国南安普顿大学攻读博士学位,师从英国皇家学会会士M. Fleischmann教授,主攻电化学SERS技术,之后回到厦门大学工作至今。主要研究兴趣包括SERS、谱学电化学、等离激元光子学、纳米化学等,先后获得国际电化学会(ISE)、英国、法国、日本、美国和中国等多个学术奖项。2005年当选为中国科学院院士和英国皇家化学会会士。2010年当选为ISE会士,2014年当选为发展中国家科学院院士。曾任国际电化学会主席,现任福建省能源材料科学与技术创新实验室主任、十余种国际学术期刊(Matter, JACS, Chem, Chem. Sci., National Science Rev.等)顾问编委、Science in China-Chemistry和 Chem. Soc. Rev. 副主编。
